Hello world, it’s me. Boy, have I got something important to say
How does one start an inaugural blog?
Uh, hi world. Over here, in the dark, unnoticed corner of the blogosphere. It’s me. What I’m about to write is IMPORTANT, ageless-riddles-revealed IMPORTANT, freakin’-blow-your-mind IMPORTANT.
O.K., I know I’m overselling this thing. Occupational hazard.
Actually my expectations for this space are a little more modest. I wanted an outlet for my writing and to pass on my observations about life, parenting, family, culture, philosophy, religion, art and random things that catch my eye — like almost every other 40-something who’s got a computer and an emotional inch to scratch these days.
My credentials? The same as most every other blogger out there: Nada.
I’m not an expert on anything. But I know stuff, which is Reason #1 you might like my blog. Who knows when I will let loose with some intriguing trivia you can file away for the next time you’re on the edge of an awkward silence. I’ve also witnessed a lot of neat events, which is Reason #2. I also occasionally tell stories about celebrities I’ve met, which is Reason #3 — and, let’s face it, much more compelling reason to return to this little corner of the blogosphere.
A little about me: I’m a 40-something online journalist with a wife and two kids. I’m curious, appreciate good conversations, especially those that start with questions like, Why are we here? What does it all mean? and Why does Shawn on Psych seem at moments to be the walking re-incarnation of Chris Knight from Real Genius?
I also like laughter, my own especially. Life is full of irony, contradictions and complications. You might as well learn how to laugh because Lord knows you get enough practice crying.
A little more about me if you haven’t already had enough: I’m from the South (Georgia born and bred) but have lived all over, including on both coasts (California, Connecticut), and now in the middle of the U.S. (New Mexico). All that moving around has caused me to marvel on occasion that the U.S. is one nation, but it is, for 234 years and counting. And nothing I see happening these days is going to change that, no matter how much talk you hear about secession.
As for what I like to do, I like to read (history, literature, travel, cultural criticism, philosophy, science), watch films, snow ski, listen to music, linger in museums, luxuriate in long conversations and watch certain TV shows — The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Homicide, Northern Exposure, Freaks and Geeks and Psych — over and over again.
Most of all though, I like hanging with the fam – the aforementioned wife and two kids –because they are the coolest people I know.
So that about sums it up about me. Hope to see you hanging around.
Talk to you later.
